Case Study

Photographer Promotion: A case study on how to sell out all Christmas photo sessions amid peak competition across social media and messaging apps (Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Instagram Direct)

December. A time when every other photographer offers Christmas photo sessions, and clients drown in a sea of identical offers with Christmas trees and fairy lights. In recent years, competition has peaked: photo studios are packed with decorations, and social media feeds are inundated with festive portfolios and "special deals." It would seem that the chances of standing out are close to zero.

Yet holiday sales do not start in December. In December, it simply becomes obvious who prepared in advance and who is again frantically trying to attract clients when feeds are already overloaded with identical offers. To stand out among competitors, you need to plan far more than just advertising. You need a distinct photoshoot concept and format, photo zones and visuals, tailored offers for different audience segments, gift certificates, engaging social media content, a seamless customer journey to booking, and a robust ad strategy. The best time to start is September: providing ample time to build a compelling proposition, test creatives, and enter November with a proven, high-performing sales engine.

Our client reached out to us much later: at the end of November, with only days left before the active pre-holiday rush. The task sounded almost like an SOS: quickly attract the target audience and book all available slots for Christmas studio photo sessions. We accepted the challenge.

And this case study is a vivid demonstration that even with a late start, impressive results can be achieved. But it also proves another key truth: had preparation started in September, the opportunities for testing, audience nurturing, and revenue growth would have been substantially higher. Read how we delivered under tight deadlines, and take note: holiday sales campaigns for products and services must be prepared months in advance, not two weeks before Christmas.

Our Client: Professional photographer, Riga, Latvia (name withheld per privacy agreement).

The photographer works in Riga and internationally, specializing in love story, sports, private, and family photography.

Campaign Timeline: November 29 to December 15, 2019.

Our Objective: Attract the target audience, generate strong interest in Christmas studio photo sessions, and secure full bookings under high competition and tight pre-holiday deadlines.

What we implemented for the client: We did not limit ourselves to merely launching ads. Within a short timeframe, we developed and executed a comprehensive promotional campaign: segmented the target audience, designed distinct ad creatives for each client group, launched targeted ad campaigns on Facebook and Instagram, boosted engagement with interactive contests and gamification, introduced booking bonuses and gift cards, and connected an automated chatbot for seamless customer communication in Facebook Messenger and Instagram Direct.

Because work began in late November, the active phase of the campaign ran in December - the period of highest market competition. We segmented the target audience into several categories: dedicated ad sets were built for couples, families, and parents with children. Thanks to this segmentation, each group saw relevant visuals and messaging, and the advertising worked with pinpoint precision. For example, there was a dedicated campaign for couples, and separate campaigns for families with children. Visuals served as direct psychological triggers. Here is an example:

In the screenshots above, you can see data from Facebook Business Manager, where we configured target audiences and managed targeted ads across all Facebook and Instagram placements.

To drive faster audience growth, we organized contests with gamification elements where participants received bonuses upon booking. We also promoted studio gift certificates - a thoughtful and popular Christmas present.

Our Results: Based on campaign analytics, over the 17 days of active advertising: we reached 24,300+ people, engaged 4,006 people with promotional posts (with an automated chatbot routing users into Messenger or Direct for further consultation), and gained 81 new targeted followers on the photographer's page. Overall, all available session slots were completely booked out.

Campaign performance analytics: reach, engagements, and follower growth

Our experience working with this photographer demonstrated that even in an oversaturated market, a business can not only survive, but thrive. The key is to stop playing by everyone else's rules and start creating your own.

If clients already plan holiday trips and festivities in advance, Christmas photoshoots should be held earlier, and marketing campaigns should be launched in late October rather than December. This ensures photos are delivered on time for the holidays and prevents cancellations due to unexpected travel plans.

Plan your photo sessions thoroughly. Turn your social media profiles into a source of inspiration and solutions for clients. Tell stories, share behind-the-scenes processes, and deliver authentic value. Offer creative concepts that your competitors do not have.

If you develop your promotional strategy in advance (from late October), your booking schedule will be orderly and stress-free. Introducing an early-bird booking system with special bonuses creates a win-win scenario: clients secure their preferred slots with great mood, and your studio guarantees full capacity. After all, the holiday atmosphere captured in a photograph lasts a lifetime, regardless of whether the shoot took place in October or November!

Even minor strategic refinements and smart social media tactics can turn a chaotic pre-holiday scramble into a profitable success story. It is not about heavy discounts or spamming posts, but about a cohesive strategy that can create a real waiting list for your sessions.
